Genital Plastic Surgery Sydney

Specialist plastic surgery in Sydney.

Private, personalised care from a female Specialist Plastic Surgeon.

Genital plastic surgery refers to procedures on the external female genitals and the mons pubis. At MOT Plastic Surgery in Sydney this covers labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction, monsplasty, and labia majoraplasty, all performed by Dr Maryam Seyedabadi, Specialist Plastic Surgeon, MBBS FRACS.

Vulval anatomy varies widely between people in size, shape, symmetry and colour, and there is no single normal. Patients ask about these procedures for practical reasons, including chafing, irritation, tissue catching in underwear, difficulty with exercise or cycling, discomfort in fitted clothing, and difficulty keeping the area clean and comfortable. Others are bothered by asymmetry, by appearance, or by changes that followed childbirth, weight change or cancer treatment. All of these are reasonable reasons to seek information, and none of them mean there is something wrong with you.

Surgery is not always the answer. After examining you, Dr Maryam may advise that your anatomy is within a normal range and that an operation is not the right option, or that something else should be addressed first. You are entitled to a plain explanation either way, and to leave a consultation without booking anything.

Who it may suit

  • Tissue that catches, pulls or chafes in underwear, swimwear or activewear
  • Irritation, moisture or difficulty with hygiene in skin folds
  • Discomfort with exercise, cycling, running or sex
  • Asymmetry between the two sides, present since puberty or developed later
  • Changes following pregnancy or childbirth, weight loss or gain, or treatment for cancer
  • Concern about appearance that you have considered over time rather than recently

Procedures we offer

Labiaplasty and Clitoral Hood Reduction

Reduction or reshaping of the labia minora, the inner lips of the vulva, where they protrude and cause dragging, chafing or irritation, or where asymmetry is a concern. Excess clitoral hood tissue can be reduced in the same operation. Performed under general anaesthetic, usually as day surgery.

Monsplasty

Removal of excess skin and fat over the mons pubis, the area above the pubic bone, and repositioning of the remaining tissue so it sits flatter and higher. Most often sought after pregnancy or a significant change in weight, and frequently combined with abdominoplasty.

Labia Majoraplasty

Surgery on the labia majora, the outer lips. Excess skin and volume can be reduced where tissue is bulky or loose, or volume can be added with a fat graft where tissue has deflated. The underlying cause may be congenital or acquired after weight change, pregnancy or cancer treatment.

Recovery

Recovery depends on which procedure you have, how much tissue is involved and whether procedures are combined. The points below are a general guide, and Dr Maryam will give you an estimate for your own operation rather than a fixed number.

  • Swelling, bruising and oedema are expected in the first one to two weeks, with residual swelling often taking several weeks or months to settle.
  • Time away from work commonly ranges from about a week for smaller procedures to two weeks or more for monsplasty or combined surgery, and longer for physically demanding jobs.
  • Loose clothing, cotton underwear, ice and careful hygiene are usually advised early on.
  • Exercise, cycling, swimming, tampons and sexual activity are generally restricted for around four to six weeks, on Dr Maryam’s advice.
  • Review appointments are arranged so healing can be checked, and the settled result usually becomes clear over three to six months.

Risks and considerations

These are real operations with real risks. Common to all three are bleeding, haematoma, infection, delayed healing or separation of the wound edges, scarring that can be firm or tender for a period, and altered sensation that is usually temporary but occasionally persistent. Over-correction, under-correction and residual asymmetry can occur, and revision surgery is sometimes needed. Fat grafting carries the additional possibility that part of the graft is reabsorbed.

General anaesthetic has its own risks, including nausea, and less commonly clotting or chest complications, which rise with longer or combined procedures, smoking, higher body weight and certain medical conditions. Dr Maryam will discuss the risks that apply to you, how a complication would be managed, and what surgery can and cannot change. No result can be promised.

Your consultation with Dr Maryam

Consultations are held privately at the rooms at 2c Heeley Street, Paddington NSW 2021. Dr Maryam Seyedabadi is a female Specialist Plastic Surgeon, AHPRA registration MED0001341746, which matters to many patients considering these procedures. A chaperone is available for any examination and you may bring a support person. She operates at St Luke’s Hospital in Potts Point, East Sydney Private Hospital, Sydney Day Hospital, The Skin Hospital in Darlinghurst and Double Bay Day Hospital.

Australian rules require a referral from a registered medical practitioner before your consultation, and a referral from your GP is preferred because your general practitioner knows your medical history. A cooling-off period of at least seven days applies between giving consent and having surgery, and at least three months for patients under 18, who also need assessment by an appropriate registered health practitioner. Fees are quoted after your consultation. To arrange an appointment, call 1300 067 668.

Your Journey, Step by Step

Consultation

An open, unhurried conversation with Dr Maryam about what has changed, what is concerning you, and what you are hoping to achieve, whether that is function, appearance, or both. This is also where your medical history and any previous procedures are discussed.

Assessment

A physical examination relevant to the procedure you are considering, covering the anatomy involved and any factors that affect your suitability. Preoperative photographs are taken as a standard part of planning, with your consent.

Your Plan

Everything from your consultation and assessment comes together into a plan personalised to you: which procedure or combination suits you, what it will and will not change, the risks involved, and a realistic picture of the result.

Before your consultation

Common questions, answered plainly.

What does genital plastic surgery involve, and which procedures are available?

Genital plastic surgery is a group of procedures that address the external genital area. Dr Maryam Seyedabadi offers labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction, monsplasty, which reduces excess skin and fat over the mons pubis, and labia majoraplasty. Some people have one procedure, others combine two. What suits you depends on your anatomy, your symptoms and your goals, which are assessed at your consultation.

How do I know if genital plastic surgery is suitable for me?

People seek these procedures for different reasons, including physical discomfort, irritation, difficulty with exercise, clothing or hygiene, changes after pregnancy or weight loss, and concerns about appearance. All of these are reasonable reasons to ask a question. At your consultation Dr Seyedabadi examines the area, discusses what is and is not achievable for your anatomy, and may advise that surgery is not the right option for you.

Can I see a female surgeon, and will my consultation be private?

Dr Seyedabadi is a female Specialist Plastic Surgeon, MBBS FRACS, and many patients specifically look for a female surgeon when discussing intimate concerns. Consultations are held privately at her rooms at 2c Heeley Street, Paddington. You can bring a support person if you wish, and a chaperone is available for examinations. You are welcome to ask questions at any point, and nothing is examined without your consent.

Do I need a GP referral before booking a genital plastic surgery consultation in Sydney?

Yes. In Australia a GP referral is required before a consultation for cosmetic surgery, and a cooling off period applies between your consultation and your surgery date. Fees are quoted after your consultation, once the plan is clear. Risks, limitations and recovery are discussed in detail before you decide. Surgery takes place at accredited facilities including St Luke’s Hospital in Potts Point and East Sydney Private Hospital. Call 1300 067 668.
