Risks and Complications

Every surgical procedure comes with potential risks and complications. It’s important for patients to understand the following general risks.

Scarring is a natural part of healing after surgery. The appearance of scars can vary based on individual skin type, genetics, and the location of the incision. Some patients may develop hypertrophic or keloid scars, which can be treated under the guidance of Dr Maryam.

Infections can occur when bacteria enter the surgical site. Signs include redness, increased pain, and pus. While strict sterility measures are used, following post-operative care instructions is key to avoiding infection. Antibiotics may be required if an infection develops.

Some level of pain is expected after surgery, but it varies by procedure and individual pain tolerance. Your surgeon will provide pain management strategies. If severe or prolonged pain occurs, consult Dr Maryam immediately.

Post-operative bleeding can be internal or external. Internal bleeding (haematoma) may cause swelling and pressure. Immediate attention is required if you experience unusual swelling or bleeding.

Seromas, fluid build-up under the skin, can develop after surgery. They may cause discomfort or visible bumps and may need to be drained.

Complications from anaesthesia can include allergic reactions, issues with breathing, or blood pressure fluctuations. These risks are minimized with continuous monitoring during the procedure.

Results may not always match expectations due to asymmetry or skin irregularities. It’s important to have realistic expectations. In some cases, revision surgery might be required.

Surgical manipulation may lead to nerve damage, causing numbness or tingling. Most nerve functions return within months, but some changes may be permanent.

Bruising and swelling are common post-surgery. Following care instructions can reduce these effects. Contact Dr Maryam if swelling or bruising is unusually severe.

Though extremely rare, there is always a risk of death during surgery, often due to severe complications or underlying health conditions. Dr Maryam conducts thorough screenings and prioritises safety.
